Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an excellent thermoplastic polymer plasticizer excellent in compatibility, free from smoking during molding and not causative of bleedout by preparing a specific modified polyvinyl alcohol.
SOLUTION: This thermoplastic polymer plasticizer is a lactone-modified polyvinyl alcohol of the formula (wherein X, Y and Z are mol% in compsn. with 5≤X≤30, 0≤Y≤30, 70≤Z≤95 and X+Y+Z=100; W is H or -COR2; R1 is a 2-10C alkylene group; R2 is an aryl or 1-20C alkyl group; and n is the average no. of lactone molecules added with 1≤n≤20). This lactone-modified polyvinyl alcohol is obtd. by melt-kneading polyvinyl alcohol, a lactone monomer and a polymn. catalyst at a temp. of 50 to 250°C, and then esterifying terminal hydroxyl groups with a carboxylic acid deriv.
