PURPOSE: To easily form a thin strontium sulfide film by forming the layer of a mixture of an org. strontium compound having a strontium-sulfur bond with a specified dopant on a substrate and by thermally decomposing the mixture in an oxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: An org. strontium compound having at least one internal strontium-sulfur bond, e.g. strontium laurylmercaptide is mixed with an org. metallic compound having one or more metal-sulfur bonds, e.g. cerium octylmercaptide as a dopant. The mixture is dissolved in a solvent and applied to the substrate of alumina or the like. After the solvent is volatilized by drying, the mixture is thermally decomposed in an oxidizing atmosphere e.g. in the air to form a thin strontium sulfide film. This film may be baked in an inert atmosphere as required. By this method, the thin film of a large area can easily be produced.
