PURPOSE: To obtain a thiophene derivative as a monomer for giving films which have self-holding properties, high induction properties and exhibit liquid crystallinity and orientation properties.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I or formula II {k is 1 to 30; R1 is H, 1 to 30C alkyl; R2 is formula III to formula IX [R3 is CN, NO2, (CH2)mCH3 (m is 0 to 29), O-(CH2)nCH3 (n is 0 to 29)]}. The compound of formula I or II is obtained by allowing a chlorinating agent such as thionyl chloride to act on a thiophenecarboxylic acid of formula X or a thiophenedicarboxylic acid of formula XI followed by reaction of the resulting acid chloride with a hydroxy-terminated compound of the formula: HO-(CH2)k-OR2. The compounds can readily be led to polythiophene by chemically or electrochemically oxidative polymerization and the polythiophene realizes nematic or smectic liquid crystalline states at a temperature near the normal one.
