PURPOSE: To increase the quantity of far-reaching light and to brightly illuminate a short range so as to prevent degrading of driver's visibility by employing a paraboloid at the center of the upper half of a reflector, and employing elliptic paraboloids on the right and left of the upper half.
CONSTITUTION: A headlight has a composite reflecting surface comprising a paraboloid reflecting portion 21 disposed at the center of the upper half of a reflector 2, a paraboloid-of-revolution reflecting portion 22 disposed in the lower half, and elliptic paraboloid reflecting portions 23 disposed on the right and left of the upper half. The paraboloid reflecting portion 21 is formed into a paraboloid showing a parabola on its vertical cross section and a straight line on its horizontal cross section. Light from an oncoming filament is reflected at the paraboloid reflecting portion 21, and in the downward direction in which the light approaches a horizontal line, the light horizontally diverges and vertically converges, thus providing a narrow spot pattern. The elliptic paraboloids 23 are connected to the.paraboloid reflecting portion 21 and the paraboloid-of- revolution reflecting surface 22 without providing a difference in height among them. A spot pattern formed by the elliptic paraboloid reflecting portions 23 is roughly fan-shaped.
