Abstract:
PURPOSE: To enhance the rate of removal of leukocytes relative to the thickness of a filter material while maintaining the overall performance of a conventional filter material. CONSTITUTION: A filter material 1 comprises a textile web having a thickness T of at least 1 mm or more, preferably about 2 to 12 mm, and a bulk density of about 0.05 to 0.4 g/cm<3> and is used for removing leukocytes from a human blood fraction or the whole blood. The web includes a number of intertwined textile fibers 5 with an average Denier of about 0.05 to 0.75 and an average length of about 3 to 15 mm. The weight ratio of small fiber pieces 10 to the textile fibers is about 1:99 to 40:60. A number of glass fibers 8 having an average diameter of 0.1 to 5 μm and occupying 2 to 85% of the web also form a part of the basis material. The weight of a binder is 0.1 to 20% of the web.
