Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition, capable of generating large shearing force even in applying a weak electric field, excellent in electrical characteristics and stability with time and useful as a fluid, etc., for clutches by dispersing specific disperse-phase particles in an electrical insulating dispersion medium. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition is obtained by carrying out aqueous suspension polymerization of a monomeric mixture of (A) a vinyl aromatic compound (e.g. styrene) with (B) a polyvinyl compound (e.g. divinylbenzene) and, as necessary, (C) other vinyl compounds added thereto with a surfactant (preferably an anionic surfactant such as sodium oleate) as a suspending agent, sulfonating aromatic rings present in the resultant polymerized cross-linked substance and dispersing disperse-phase particles composed of the prepared sulfonated polymer in an electrical insulating dispersion medium. For example, sulfuric acid is used as a sulfonating agent. Furthermore, benzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile are preferred as a polymerization initiator.
