Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the admixture for packing optical fiber cables which does not generate harmful gases, is safe to handle, has proper consistency in spite of compounding of a fire retardant at high concn. with a combustible base oil and has sufficient fire retardance and waterproofness by using metal hydroxide powder having a specific gain size as the fire retardant. CONSTITUTION:The metal hydroxide powder which has >=60wt.%, more preferably >=75wt.% ratio of particles having <=2mu micron size and above all, the metal hydroxide powder which has 0.1 to 1.5 micron average grain size or 4 to 20m<2>/g BET specific surface area are preferable. The metal hydroxide is preferably aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. The metal hydroxide powder is subjected to a surface treatment with a surface treating agent. The base oil is preferably a silicone oil, poly alpha-olefin oil, hydroxy-converted poly alpha-olefin oil, and copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefin. The production process consists of a mixing stage for compatibilizing and mixing, for example, the fire retardant and the base oil as well as the other materials, a kneading stage for kneading the mixture composed of the fire retardant, the base oil and the other materials to impart a thixotropic property thereto and a defoaming stage.
