PURPOSE: To adjust the radial direction gap between hydrostatic bearings and a journal optimally for exerting the bearing and sealing functions.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrostatic bearing is structured so that a laminate 5 consisting of a ring-shaped electrically deformable substance, i.e., piezoelectric substance, constitutes a ring-shaped actuator 4 inside a housing 10 adjacent to a journal 2, and the actuator 4 is attached to a liner 3 made of a metal or ceramic material. A pressure fluid flows in a radial direction gap 14 between the liner 3 and the journal 2. The gap 14 is adjusted into a proper clearance, by feeding a power source with information about the journal speed sensed by a shaft sensor 21 and reception, processing, analysis, and command issue according to the sensing signal given by a digital program controller 22 and thereby adjusting the voltage to be impressed on the actuator 4. For the seal, by making optimum similar optimum adjustment of the gap 14, the desired functions can be exerted.
