Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enhance the acceleration property of an internal combustion engine by minimizing the amount of correction for retarding ignition timing which is unnecessary for restraining knocking. CONSTITUTION:An ignition timing control system is provided with a knock identification portion 2 for determining from the output of a knock sensor whether or not knocking has occurred, a retard correction amount determining portion 3 for correcting ignition timing to retard the same if knocking is recognized as occurring from said output and for restoring the correction to advance ignition timing while knocking does not occur, storage portions 5, 6 for storing first and second reference ignition timing data which are set in accordance with the operating condition of the engine, and a displacement determining portion 4 for displacing the fundamental ignition timing within first and second reference ignition periods on the basis of the controlled variable for retarding ignition timing. The control system also includes ignition timing computing elements 7, 10 for determining the fundamental ignition timing on the basis of the output of the portion 4 and for determining the ignition timing of the engine on the basis of the fundamental ignition timing and the displacement by which the ignition timing is retarded, and the speed at which correction is restored is increased when the ignition timing of the engine is retarded with respect to the first reference ignition timing, while when the ignition timing is advanced with respect to the first reference ignition timing the restoring speed is reduced.
