PURPOSE: To produce a flame-retardant graft polymer which exhibits resistance to dripping and puddling on exposure to fire by grafting melamine onto a thermoplastic polyamide under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: This flame-retardant graft polymer is produced by mixing 90-65 wt.% thermoplastic polyamide capable of forming a graft polymer with melamine, subjecting the polyamide to incipient depolymn. with, based on the total wt. of the mixture, about 10-35 wt.% melamine having a particle size of 50 μm or lower, subjecting the polyamide to controlled incipient depolymn. before or after the mixing to cause the graft polymn. of melamine onto the polyamide, and cooling the resultant graft copolymer to inhibit further depolymn. Thus is obtd. a flame-retardant graft polymer which exhibits resistance to dripping and puddling on exposure to fire.
