PURPOSE: To easily recognize which range of a basic picture corresponds to an expanded picture by simultaneously displaying a recognition picture indicating which part of the basic picture is expanded on a part of the expanded picture.

CONSTITUTION: In the case of expanding a part of a basic picture to be a picture normally received by a television receiver or the like by video signal processing to observe it, an expanded part display picture 2 in the basic picture is simultaneously displayed on a part of an expanded picture 1. Consequently which range of the basic picture corresponds to the expanded picture 1 can easily be recognized and the optimumness of the selected picture can be known. The display picture 2 is preferablly displayed so as to be distinguished from the expanded picture by single or plural elements such as a color, a frame, a line, and a pattern capable of identify which part of the basic picture corresponds to the expanded picture 1.
