PURPOSE: To provide a heat resistant catalyst which can be suppressed in the flocculation of an active component and the reduction in the specific surface area of a carrier even under a high temp. reaction condition, obtained by supporting a catalytically active component by a carrier based on composite oxide of Al and La.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst comprising a combination of a noble metal and a base metal being catalytically active components is supported by composite oxide obtained by adding Al and La, especially desirably, a lanthanum β-alumina (11W14 Al2O3.La2O3) to obtain an objective heat resistant catalyst. The aforementioned lanthanum β-alumina is obtaind by using hydroxides of La and Al, oxides of La and Al or compounds afording oxides by heat treatment as starting materials while baking the mixture thereof at 800°C or more. This composite oxide may be applied to ceramics or mixed therewith. Pd being one of the catalytic components supported by this composite oxide is held under a highly dispersed state even if baking is performed at 1,200°C and imparts the heat resistant catalyst having aforementioned characteristics.
