Abstract:
PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title compound in high yield, advantageously on an industrial scale, by reacting acrylonitrile with water using an improved Raney copper catalyst having high activity, small intra-lot scattering of activity and good filtration property. CONSTITUTION:A molten liquid of raw material alloy for Raney copper catalyst is converted to liquid droplet or liquid string by rotary water-atomizing process or gas or water-atomizing process and is directly contacted with a liquid or gaseous cooling medium. The cooled and coagulated alloy is powder having particle diameter of <=1mm. Acrylonitrile is made to react with water in N2 gas atmosphere at 40-150 deg.C under normal or positive pressure in the presence of the Raney copper catalyst produced by the above process to obtain the objective compound useful as a monomer for the production of an acrylamide polymer, etc., utilizable as a paper strengthening agent, flocculant, etc. The reaction can be continuously carried out over a long period by the use of the above catalyst. The pulverization process can be eliminated and the production cost can be reduced.
