Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain glyoxal useful as a fiber processing agent or paper processing agent in high yield by oxidizing and dehydrogenating ethylene glycol by the use of a silver alloy catalyst containing one or more of metal components having a melting point higher than that of silver.

CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol is oxidized and dehydrogenated by using a silver alloy containing one or more components (e.g. gold, platinum or palladium) making the melting point of the silver alloy higher than that of silver in the presence of 0.1-5.0ppm, calculated as phosphorus based on ethylene glycol, of a phosphorus compound to give the objective compound.
