PURPOSE: To obtain a stable large pretilt angle and excellent orienting characteristics of a liquid crystal and to obtain good electro-optic characteristics under various conditions by incorporating a polymer having a repeating unit expressed by specified formula.

CONSTITUTION: The film contains a polymer having the repeating unit expressed by formula. In formula, R1 is a bivalent org. group and 2, is a univalent org. group. In formula, R1 is a bivalent org. group, and especially when an org. group containing aromatic groups such as p-phenylene groups and m-phenylene groups is used, excellent characteristics are obtd. R2 is a univalent org. group, and especially, when an org. group containing aliphatic groups of ≥4 carbon number or aromatic groups of ≥7 carbon number such as butyl groups and hexyl groups is used, excellent characteristics are obtd. Thereby, the obtd. film has good orienting property of the liquid crystal and good electro-optic characteristics and can be used for various liquid crystal display elements.
