Abstract:
A process for the preparation of halogenated alcohols of the formula I Hal-X-OH (I) in which X represents a straight-chain or branched, substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical having at least 4 carbon atoms in the chain, which if desired is interrupted by one or more heteroatoms, and Hal represents halogen, is proposed, in which a diol of the formula II HO-X-OH (II) in which X has the above meanings, is reacted with an aqueous hydrogen halide solution in a water-immiscible organic solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions and at a temperature between 50 and 150 DEG C, an excess of hydrogen halide, relative to the diol of the formula II, of 10 to 200 mol per cent being employed and a volume ratio of inorganic phase to organic phase of 1:2 to 1:50 being chosen.
