PURPOSE: To unnecessitate excessive hardware parts and an operation space by burying a track ball pointing device in a display housing and providing selecting buttons on the back surface of the track ball.
CONSTITUTION: The display 16 is provided at the opening of the housing 18 in the shape of a nearly parallel hexahedron to be the displaying part of a portable computer. The track ball 20 is buried at the position of the width of a hand from the bottom face of the housing 18. At the time of moving this track ball 20, a cursor moves around in the display 16 in the same direction as the moving direction of the ball 20 and at a proportional speed. In addition, the selective buttons 24 and 26 are provided on the back surface of the display housing to be arranged just at the back of the ball 20. Thus, at the time of using the pointing device, the ball 20 is handled by a thumb and the selecting buttons 24 and 26 on the back surface of the housing are press-operated by a pointing or middle finger. In addition, a user's hand grasps the side part of the housing 18 to naturally and accurately operate.
