PURPOSE: To provide a person recognition device which generates the output in accordance with a fact that the face features of a person are not decided for an acquired animation image.

CONSTITUTION: The position of a mobile object image is detected by an image signal 1 acquired from a CCD camera through an image memory 2, an absolute difference part 3, a threshold value deciding part 4, a comparing part 5, an X axis density projection part 6, a maximum X axis projection coordinate extracting part 7, a Y axis density projection part 8, and a maximum Y axis projection coordinate extracting part 9. A head width extracting part 10 specifies an image area where a face image shuld be included in the detected position of the mobile object image. A face feature extracting/deciding part 11 decides whether an image having the face features given from an edge detecting part 12 is included in the specified image area or not. If not included, a face deciding result signal 13 is transmitted and an output generating part 14 generates a fact that a subject does not have satisfactory face features in the form of some output.
