Abstract:
A method of protecting a pressurised water reactor comprises: (i) providing safety system grade core exit thermocouples (45) at selected fuel assemblies across the reactor core (9); (ii) automatically measuring core exit temps. at these locations; (iii) automatically measuring average core inlet and outlet temps., at the cold leg (31) and the hot leg (21), using temp. sensors (41, 43); (iv) using a safety system grade analyser to analyse automatically the pattern of exit temps. and the average inlet and outlet temps. to identify a dropped control rod; and (v) using safety system grade equipment to block automatically the withdrawal of control rods from the core when a dropped rod is identified. Pref. the automatic analysis (step (iv)) involves calculating a relative power deviation for each fuel assembly. From this, curvature indices are obtained for the fuel assemblies which permit recognition of a dropped control rod or a malfunctioning thermocouple. The temp. rise data, at reference conditions, used to calculate relative power deviations for each fuel assembly is periodically updated using core maps generated by an incore detector system (47).
