PURPOSE: To obtain a wordprocessor in which the entry of a character or a graphic pattern to the wordprocessor is executed simply and a required pattern of the character and graphic pattern is used for a diverted picture in the case of generating a document and the job efficiency at document generation is much improved.

CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnification reader 102 reading a character or a graphic pattern as binarized picture data is provided and a predetermined area on a screen of a display device 203 is designated by a signal from a key board 202. Then in the character generating mode by an external font function, picture data of the required part of the character and graphic pattern are compressed to generate character picture data in a predetermined format.
