Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enhance the adhesive strength of a magnetic layer to the substrate, to reduce the coefft. of kinematic friction of the surface of the magnetic layer, to improve running performance and to ensure very excellent still characteristics.

CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a continuous thin film type magnetic layer on the nonmagnetic substrate. The magnetic layer contains Co and O, or Co, O and Ni and/or Cr in 0.05-0.3 atomic ratio of O to Co or Co+Ni and has an oxygen-rich layer in the surface part on the substrate side. The oxygen content of the oxygen-rich layer corresponds to 0.2-0.5 atomic ratio, the thickness of the oxygen-rich layer is 50-500 and the oxygen content is higher than that, of the other part by ≥50%. A lubricative layer having 100-400 thickness is formed as the outermost layer.
