PURPOSE: To provide an image reader which does not need to conduct an operation for initializing a lens means and a reading means, at the time of turning on a power source in the next time, when the power supply is disconnected by shut-off control.

At the time of turning on a power source in the next time, it is decided to be shut-off in the previous time by the storage contents of the storage means 7, the initialization of the lens means 2 is not conducted, and only initialization of the reading means 10 is conducted. At the time of shut-off, the initialization of the reading means 10 is also conducted and at the time of turning on the power supply it is also possible to omit the initialization of the reading means 10.
