PURPOSE: To compress the band of a high quality television signal, by converting a picture signal into plural signal series of low speed, band-compressing respectively these signal series and transmitting them with multiplexing.
CONSTITUTION: A picture digital signal inputted from an input terminal IN is written in a storage device 7 in 8-bit, 72.9MHz and outputted in 48-bit, 12.15MHz. The output data series of the storage device 7 is processed at band compressing sections A1∼A6, multiplexed at a multiplex circuit 8 and outputted from an output terminal OUT1. A signal inputted from an input terminal IN2 is separated at a separating circuit 9 at the receiving side and inputted respectively to band expanding sections B1∼B6. The output of the band expanding sections B1∼B6 is inputted to a storage device 10 for rearranging the respective signal series and the rearranged picture digital signal is obtained.
