Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a bis(N-vinylcarboxamide), good in copolymerizability with monomers, excellent in chemical stability and suitable as a cross-linking agent capable of providing good cross-linked polymers. CONSTITUTION:A compound, e.g. N,N'-1,3-propylenebis(N-vinylacetamide) expressed by formula I {R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is 3-10C alkylene, -(CH2.CHR<3>.O) n-CH2.CHR<3>-[R<3> is H or methyl; (n) is 1-4] or formula II [(m) is 0-4]}. The aforementioned compound is suitable as a cross-linking agent for producing both cross-linked polymers containing an N-vinyl compound as one component of monomers and water-swellable gels consisting essentially of an N- vinylcarboxamide compound. The resultant cross-linked polymers are chemically stable, especially good in absorption rate for a liquid in which metallic ions and organic ions coexist in the system and suitable as a liquid absorbent having wide uses in various fields and have excellent absorptivity for water and organic solvents such as alcohols.
