Abstract:
A method is described for compressing character or pictorial image data into a quantity of data by means of a method which establishes blocks D-D, and stores information for specifying the outline of a character as an approximated with sets of functional curves or straight lines to effect data compression. A character outline is developed on X- and Y-coordinates and is divided by split points D into a set of blocks D-D each defined by means of a single-valued function involving x as a variable, and the character outline is approximated by means of a curve passing through a plurality of sampling points P1 to Pn established on each of said blocks. For each sampling point, the density of the sampling points in its vicinity is established. Then, a new split point on any of the blocks where the density of sampling points exceeds a prescribed threshold is established, and that block is split into two blocks by means of the new split point, Q=D'.
