PURPOSE: To provide a visual characteristic well-balanced to all directions by forming two polarizing plates for nipping a liquid crystal cell in directions of mutually crossing their transmitting axes or absorbing axes at a right angle which is different from the orienting direction of the liquid crystal molecule on the liquid crystal cell surface, and properly setting the gap thickness of the liquid crystal cell.
CONSTITUTION: In a liquid crystal display panel having a liquid crystal cell 25 in which one picture element is constituted by a prescribed number of liquid crystal domains differed in the orienting state and visual angle characteristic of a liquid crystal molecule 24a, the liquid crystal cell 25 being nipped by two polarizing plates 26, 27, the two polarizing plates 26, 27 are set in directions of mutually crossing the transmitting axes or absorbing axes 26a, 27a at a right angle which is different from the orienting direction of the liquid crystal molecule 24a on the liquid crystal cell 25 surface. The liquid crystal cell 25 is formed with a gap thickness which makes the background substantially achromatic. A sharp contrast reduction in vertical visual angle characteristic is prevented by the two polarizing plates 26, 27, and a background color with less sense of incompatibility can be obtained by setting the gap thickness of the liquid crystal cell 25.
