Abstract:
A belt-type continuously variable transmission for use with a motor vehicle engine has a hydraulic actuator for effecting at least one of speed ratio control and clutch control. The belt-type continuously variable transmission is controlled by a control system including a solenoid-operated control valve (50) for generating a controlling hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the hydraulic actuator (14,19,5A), a hydraulic pressure generator (70) for generating a hydraulic pressure corresponding to the rotational speed of the engine, a directional control valve (67) for selectively connecting the solenoid-operated control valve (50) and the hydraulic pressure generating means to the hydraulic actuator (14,19,5A), and a solenoid-operated on-off valve (74) for controlling the directional control valve. When the solenoid (74A) of the solenoid-operated on-off (74) valve is energized, the directional control valve (67) connects the solenoid-operated control valve (50) to the hydraulic actuator, and when the solenoid (74A) is de-energized, the directional control valve (67) connects the hydraulic pressure generator (70) to the hydraulic actuator (14,19,5A).
