PURPOSE: To arrange a pair of base plates at an interval high in precision and to obtain superior adhesion by using an electrodeposited polymer layer for the part to be sealed.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer layer formed by electrodeposition from a soln. contg. a dispersed electrodepositable polymer is used for a sealant for a display device comprising the first and second base plates 1, 2 having electrodes 3, 4, respectively. The plate 2 shaped into a depress form may be used. The sealant 16 is formed by electrodeposition from a soln. obtained by dispersing a spacer 7 for keeping a constant interval and an electrodepositable polymer, and, e.g., a thermosetting resin is used for said polymer. A transparent conductive film is formed on at least one of the sealing parts of the plates 1, in advance in order to electrodeposit the sealant 16, and the parts except the sealing parts are coated with a resist to prevent the electrodeposition. After the formation of the sealing parts 16, both plates 1, 2 are bonded by pressing them and the polycondensation reaction of the sealant 16 is completed by baking. As a result, the interval of both plates 1, 2 can be kept in high precision, good intimate adhesion is obtained, and it can be used for LCD, ECD, etc.
