Disclosed are 1,3,2-dioxathiolan-S-oxide derivatives (I) and their preparation: where R1 and R2 are the same or different and selected from a hydrogen atom and lower alkyl groups; the or each X, when present, is selected from halogen atoms and cyano, lower alkyl, haloalkyl and phenyl groups; n is 1 or 2; m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5; and when m is greater than 1 any two X's can be the same or different.
