PURPOSE: To obtain an intermediate transfer medium which has excellent transferability and excellent durability by specifying a relation between the swelling rate of a release layer with a liquid toner and the thickness of the release layer.
CONSTITUTION: The swelling rate of the release layer with the liquid toner, defined as A(%), and the thickness of the release layer, defined as B(μm), are so set as to satisfy a relation 10≤A×B≤3000. The retransfer from the intermediate transfer medium into a material to be transferred is defective if A×B is below 10. The reason thereof indicates that the formation of a thin liquid film layer bleeding out of the intermediate transfer medium layer swelling with the liquid toner between the toner image and the intermediate transfer medium and the peeling between the toner image and the intermediate transfer medium induced by this liquid film layer are mandatory for obtaining the good retransfer in the case of concideration of the retransfer mechanism on the material to be transferred from the intermediate transferred medium. Then, A×B is required to be ≥10, more preferably ≥100. On the other hand, the amt. of the liquid bleeding out at the time of retransfer is large and, therefore, the disturbance of the image arises if A×B exceeds 300.
