Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain an aqueous emulsion of a rosin substance having improved mechanical stability, sizing suitability, with little foaming, by phase invension of an emulsion of the substance with a sulfonate of specific structure as a dispersing agent. CONSTITUTION:(A) A molten rosin substance and (B) a sulfonate of formula I [R is 4-18C hydrocarbon group, preferably alkyl or formula II (R<1> is H or lower alkyl; A is alkylene); m is 1 or 2, and preferably 2 when R is formula II; n is an integer 4-25; X is h or DH; M is monovalent cation, e.g. Na] as a dispersing agent are mixed with water to form an emulsion comprising the continuous phase of A and the dispersion phase of B. Water is then added to effect the phase inversion of the emulsion. A mixture of (a) 0-95wt% of a rosin and (b) 5-100wt% of an enriched rosin, and if necessary other extenders, may be cited as A.
