PURPOSE: To obtain the liq. crystal comprising a conductive polymer and useful as electronic and optical materials by combining side chains comprising a liq. crystalline material with the main chain comprising a conductive polymer through 2C or higher spacers.
CONSTITUTION: The liq. crystal having side chains comprising a liq. crystal substance and the main chain comprising a conductive polymer is formed by combining the side chains with the main chain indirectly through 2C or higher spacers. The conductive polymer has conjugated double bonds in the main chain, examples being polyacetylene and polythiophene. Polyacetylene is produced by polymerizing a substd. acetylene using a Ziegler or a metathesis catalyst. Not only having characteristics inherent in a conventional polymer liq. crystal but also changing its color or electric conductivity with the change in temp., magnetic field, electrid field, etc., thus obtd. polymer liq. crystal is useful as electronic and optical materials.
