PURPOSE: To array optical fiber air on an end surface orderly and linearly at constant pitch by winding and fixing an optical fiber on two grooved plates on a drum and then cutting it.
CONSTITUTION: The two grooves plates 3 are fitted to the drum 2 closely to each other in a circumferential direction so that their groove directions are made coincident with each other. In this state, the drum 2 is rotated and the optical fiber 1 is wound while run in respective grooves, one by one. A traverser 4 moves along over the surface of the drum 2 to run the fiber 1 in the grooves properly. The fiber 1 is wound as many times as the necessary number of picture elements and then fixed to the plates 3 with resin in said state. In this case, pressure plates are mounted to fix the fiber with resin together with the pressure plates when necessary. Then, the fiber is cut between the plates 3 and 3 and removed from the drum 2 to obtain an optical fiber array.
