PURPOSE: To enable the use of an ITO film as an electrode and to enhance the productivity by preparing an ionic conductive solid resin and simultaneously adhering an electrically reducible thin film and an electrically oxidizable thin film to each other with a thin film of the resin in-between.
CONSTITUTION: An electrically reducible thin film and an electrically oxidizable thin film at least one of which is an electrochromic material are formed on electrode layers on substrates. The films are placed opposite to each other and stuck together with a liq. hardenable monomer or resin contg. an ion precursor which is ionized in ions or an electric field in the molecule or contg. it as a mixture. The monomer or resin is then reacted and hardened to form an electron insulating solid resin layer with ionic conductivity. Thus, a display cell is manufactured. By making use of synthetic resin as the material of the insulating proton conductor layer, the electrode layers can be formed by vacuum deposition, and since the resin doubles as an adhesive, the productivity is enhanced.
