PURPOSE: To obtain superior operability during recording and reading by providing an optical scanning system which makes a scan to read an original in a main scanning direction and a holding device which holds the original in a plane.

CONSTITUTION: A rotating drum 1 is wound with recording paper 2 and rotates in the main scanning direction shown by an arrow A. A recording scanning system 3 moves the recording paper 2 in the subscanning direction shown by an arrow C to perform a recording scan, and plural ink jet heads 4∼7 arranged on the concentric circle of the drum shaft inject different kinds of ink of red, yellow, blue, black, etc., while moving. An optical scanning system 8 makes a line- by-line reading scan on the original 9 in the main scanning direction and is equipped with a rodlike light source 10, a thin and long mirror 11, an infrared- ray cutting filter 12, and imaging lens 13, filters 16∼18, and image sensors 19∼ 21. Further, a holding device 23 holds the original 9 in a plane and also moves in the subscanning direction relatively to the scanning system.
