NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI(X is Br, Cl or F; R is 1W3C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 4"-Bromophenyl-4-(trans-4'-methyloxymethylcyclohexyl)benzoate.
USE: A liquid crystal compound, having the weak positive dielectric anisotropy, and capable of giving a liquid crystal composiition having the positive dielectric anisotropy by adding the compound to a liquid crystal having the negative dielectric anisotropy, and usable by mixing another compound due to the improved compatibility therewith in spite of a high melting point thereof.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reduced and then reacted with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and then an alcoholate to give a compound of formula III, which is then heated with iodine and iodic acid to afford an iodobenzene deriviative. The resultant iodobenzene derivative is converted into a nitrile, which is then converted into a benzoic acid derivative of formula IV. A benzoyl chloride is prepared from the resultant benzoic acid derivative of formula IV and then reacted with a 4-halogenopheno in pyridine to give the aimed compound of formulaI.
