PURPOSE: To obtain advantageously glycidol in epoxidizing allyl alcohol with an organic hydroperoxide, by recovering the glycidol from the above-mentioned reaction mixture as an azeotropic mixture with a hydrocarbon azeotropic agent, and distilling away the azeotropic agent.
CONSTITUTION: Allyl alcohol is reacted with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalyst, and the resultant reaction mixture is (i) distilled under reduced pressure to remove the allyl alcohol, (ii) distilled in the presence of a hydrocarbon azeotropic agent (A) forming a low-boiling azeotropic mixture with the glycidol under reduced pressure or the sequence of the above-mentioned steps is reversed to take out the glycidol as an azeotropic mixture (A') thereof with the azeotropic agent (A). The resultant azeotropic mixture (A') is then distilled in the presence of an azeotropic agent (B) forming a low-boiling azeotropic mixture (B') or the third component capable of giving about 1 relative volatility to the azeotropic agent (A) at a lower temperature then the azeotropic temperature of the azeotropic mixture (A') to give the aimed glycidol as a side cut fraction in high recovery ratio.
