PURPOSE: To obtain a reflection image with a high S/N ratio by interposing a cover plate between a sample and a sound wave propagating medium with a larger acoustic impedance to produce a equivalently large reflection signal.
CONSTITUTION: An excitation signal from a signal source 10 is applied to elements of an ultrasonic probe 40. A sound wave lens is provided on the front of the probe 40 and transmits an ultrasonic beam to a specified focus through a sound wave propagating medium 70. A cover plate 5 is set on a sample base 80. A reflected wave is generated from a sound wave irradiated on a sample through the medium 70 and the plate 5 and detected by the probe 40. The detection signal is received with a receiver 12 and applied to an image display section 18 as data for image. On the other hand, the sample base 80 is mechanically scanned and driven with a driving section 16 and the display section 18 shown the image of the sample by performing an image processing corresponding to the scanning.
