PURPOSE: To enable the erasing with an equalizer for a coated type magnetic recording medium by depositing vertically by eveporation the 1st non-magnetic layer in an island shape or fine ruggedness, a continuous magnetic metallic layer consisting essentially of Co, the 2nd non-magnetic layer and a continuous magnetic metallic layer consisting essentially of Fe successively on a nonmagnetic substrate.
CONSTITUTION: The 1st nonmagnetic layer consisting essentially of low m.p. metal such as Sb, Se, Sn or the like is vacuum deposited in an island shape of fine ruggedness on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 of polyimide or the like. A continuous magnetic metallic layer 3 consisting essentially of Co is deposited by evaporation on the layer 2 and the 2nd nonmagnetic layer 4 is formed on the layer 3 in the same way as for the layer 2. A continuous magnetic metallic layer 5 consisting essentially of Fe is deposited by evaporation on the layer 4. The layers 2W5 are all formed by a vertical vapor deposition method with which the vapor deposition efficiency is high. The layers 3, 5 are constituted of the crystals fined by the characteristics of the layers 2, 4, and the magnetic recording medium having high coercive force and good squareness ratio is obtd. The frequency characteristics that permit the direct use of an equalizer for a coated type medium produced by dispersing magnetic powder in a binder are provided to the above- mentioned medium or the like.
