PURPOSE: To reduce the recording output time as the result of communication by providing a character image pattern generating section generating a character pattern of high and low quality to the same character.

CONSTITUTION: A character image pattern generating section 5 and a control section 6 selecting a pattern are provided in a facsimile equipment having plural kinds of resolutions to the sub-scanning direction. When a control section 6 receives the information of the resolution at recording from an operating section, the resolution, character information and a character image pattern size are outputted to an image pattern generating section 5. The generating section transmits an abbreviated image pattern to a coding/decoding section 3 only for a complicated image pattern by the standard resolution and outputs an image pattern not abbreviated in other cases and the pattern is recorded on a recording section 2. Thus, when it is desired to recognize the result of communication earlier, the time is reduced by designating the standard resolution to the operating section 7.
