PURPOSE: To recover Cd in waste cells in high yield and in high purity by executing a two-step heating treatment to waste Ni-Cd cells in a volatilizing furnace.
CONSTITUTION: Waste Ni-Cd cells 1 are charged to a volatilizing furnace and remove the volatile components of resin case and electrolytic components, etc., and contents of chlorides of Fe, Ni, etc., in the cell, and they are supplied into an after-burning furnace 7 through a gas exhausting pipe 5. Combustion treatment is executed with flame from a burner 11 and discharged the volatile components as the waste gas from a gas exhausting pipe 12. Successively, the temp. in the volatilizing furnace 2 is raised to 800-1000°C to volatilize Cd incorporated in the waste cell 1 and the Cd vapor is supplied into a condensing furnace 9 by using non-oxidizing gas 4 of gaseous N2, etc., as carrier gas to cool and condense the Cd vapor and is recovered as high purity Cd in high yield.
