PURPOSE: To obtain a composite alumina carrier having a regulated pore diameter, high heat conductivity and high mechanical strength by introducing inorg. colloidal particles into the open pores in a porous alumina layer and sintering the particles and the alumina layer in one body.
CONSTITUTION: A dense alumina layer is laminated on one side or both sides of a porous alumina layer and the layers are sintered in one body. Open pores are formed in the porous alumina layer and a laminated sintered body is obtd. An inorg. colloidal soln. is then introduced into the open pores, hydrothermally treated and cooled to deposit inorg. colloidal particles and the sintered body contg. the deposited particles is sintered again. A composite alumina catalyst carrier having a large specific surface area, large pore volume, high heat conductivity and high mechanical strength and ensuring the uniform distribution of an active substance is obtd. The pore diameter of the carrier can arbitrarily be regulated.
