PURPOSE: To make it possible to added an oil-soluble substance to an ointment and obtain the titled ointment under no limitation of a gelling agent, by dissolving indomethacin in a polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester of a fatty acid.
CONSTITUTION: An anti-inflammatory and analgesic ointment prepared by dissolving indomethacin (USAN name) known as a nonsteroidal antiphlogistic agent, and having improved anti-inflammatory action in a polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester of a fatty acid, and if necessary incorporating an absorption accelerator, e.g. a medium-chain fatty acid triglyceride or diisopropyl adipate, an oil- soluble substance, e.g. beeswax, vegetable oil or lanolin, therewith. The amounts of the respective components to be used in the ointment are preferably 0.5W 1.5wt% indomethacin and 3W50wt% polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester of the fatty acid. The resultant ointment is stable even after storing for a long period without causing deposition of the indomethacin nor change in shape.
