PURPOSE: To enable the use of min. required packing materials and to obtain a composite metallic material of high strength free from shrinkage cavities in a method for production of the composite metallic material by an impregnation method, by providing a downward riser receiving spout in a downward opened type vessel contg. a porous body.
CONSTITUTION: An impregnating vessel 8 contg. a porous body 16 in a graphite case 15 is inserted into the impregnating furnace 1 of an autoclave 3 in an atmospheric atmosphere in the 1st stage. The inside of the furnace 1 is evacuated and preheated in the 2nd stage. The vessel 8 contg. the body 16 is dipped in a molten metal bath 6 so as to infilter the molten matrix alloy into the voids in the body 16 in the 3rd stage. An inert gas is forced into the vapor phase part of the furnace 1 to effect impregnation under pressure in the 4th stage. The vessel 8 is pulled from the melt 6 and is cooled to allow the matrix alloy to solidify in the 5th stage. Since the molten metal 6 is pulled while the same is held filled in a riser receiving spout 13 in this stage, the metal 6 of as much as the amount of metal shrank by solidification is replenished from the spout 3 according to the progression of the solidification of said alloy from the top. The generation of shrinkage cavities is thus prevented.
