PURPOSE: To obtain polymer latex having extremely improved monodispersibility, and improved dispersion stability, by polymerizing a hydrophobic vinyl monomer in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and a specific compound under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A hydrophobic vinyl monomer (preferably alkenylbenzene, etc.) having water-solubility of ≤10pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. water or its mixture and (B) a radical polymerization initiator is added to an aqueous medium preheated to a polymerization temperature (preferably 55W75°C), and the monomer is polymerized in the presence of (C) a carboxylated organic mercapto compound (preferably thioglycolic acid, etc.) in the absence of an emulsifying agent, to give the dsired latex. To improve dispersion stability of the latex, the polymerization is carried out by adding glycidyl methacrylate to the components AW C.
USE: Detection of antigen and antibody caused by aggregation reaction.
