PURPOSE: To manufacture efficiently a base plate having a lead-welding part which is used for fixing a plate lag to the base plate.

CONSTITUTION: After a nickel slurry is applied to the surface of a porous nickel plate 1 while it is shifted, the porous plate 1 coated with the nickel slurry is introduced into a drying furnace 3, and thus dried plate 4 is sintered in a sintering furnace 5 so as to obtain a sintered plate 6. Next, the sintered plate 6 is pressed with a roller press 8, to which thin rollers 7 are attached, so as to form pressed belt-like parts 9 on the plate 6. Then, after the plate 6 is sintered again, it is cut along the pressed parts 9 so as to form a base plate 10. After that, a lead part 11 which is made by fixing a lag to a nickel plate, is fuxed to the pressed part 9 by spot welding so as to constitute an alkaline storage battery. By the means mentioned above, a desired number of pressed belt-like parts 9 can be continuously provided on the base plate 10, and the pressed parts 9 may be cut in accordance with the shape of the base plate 10. Thus various kinds of base plates 10 can be manufactured according to the kinds of cells. In addition, owing to the resintering of the base plate 10, the internal strain caused by the pressing with the roller 8 is removed, and the intensity of the pressed parts 9 is increased by preventing the corrosion of the parts 9.
