NEW MATERIAL:A benzamide derivative expressed by formulaI(R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, etc., or R1 and R2 together with the N atom may form a pyrrolidine ring).
EXAMPLE: N-Ethyl 3-(2-naphthylmethoxy) benzamide.
USE: A herbicide capable of exhibiting a herbicidal activity against barnyard grass, umbrella plant, long stemmed water-wort, etc. which are strong injurious weeds in paddy fields without showing any phytotoxicity to rice plants.
PROCESS: A 2-halomethylnaphthalene expressed by formula II (X is halogen atom) is reacted with an m-hydroxybenzamide derivative expressed by formula III to give the compound expressed by formulaI. The reaction is carried out in an inert organic solvent, e.g. toluene, or under solventless conditions in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent, e.g. sodium carbonate, at 50°CWrefluxing temperature for 1W10hr.
