Abstract:
Controllable motor vehicle shock absorbers are provided with a cylinder (1) containing damping fluid, a piston rod (3) axially displaceable in this and a damping piston (4) fixed to its inner end, which piston divides the cylinder volume into two working chamber halves (5, 6) and has fluid passage ducts (31) generating damping force, the effective cross section of which ducts can be adjusted by a throttle element (32) and an electromagnetic drive with coil winding (46) controlling the latter. In order to obtain an even better damping force control, the electromagnetic drive with its coil winding (46) is accommodated in the damping piston (4). The throttle element (32) is influenced on the one hand by the fluid differential pressure between the two working chamber halves (5, 6) and on the other by the return force caused by the electromagnetic drive, a hydraulic compensating device (38 to 45) boosting the return force of the electromagnetic drive being advantageously fitted between the throttle element (32) and the electromagnetic drive counteracting its hydraulic adjustment.
