PURPOSE: Acrylic fibers are heated in an oxidative atmosphere and heated in an inert gas atmosphere at higher temperatures, then carbonized to shorten the time for preoxidation and produce the titled fiber of high strength.
CONSTITUTION: Fibers of acrylonitrile containing acrylic acid or the like are heated at 230W350°C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to form a fiber of about 5W8wt% oxygen content. Then, the resultant fibers are subjected to 2- stage heat treatment in a temperature range from higher than the above one to 450°C in an inert gas atmosphere such as nitrogen to give fibers convertible into carbon fibers containing less than 8wt% oxygen. The fibers are further heated at higher than 1,000°C in an inert atmospher to effect carbonization or graphitization to give the objective acrylic carbon fibers.
