PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal compsn. containing specified twoWfour types of compds. and producing a liquid crystal display device which has an excellent time division property, shows a high contrast and has a wide visual angle.

CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal compsn. is prepd. by blending 30W80wt% compd. of formula I (where R1 and R2 are each 1W10C straight chain alkyl) with at least one compd. selected from among 5W20wt% compd. of formula II (where R3 and R4 are each straight-chain alkyl or straight-chain alkoxyl), 5W50wt% compd. of formula III (where R5 and R6 are each 1W8C straight-chain alkyl) and 5W20wt% compd. of formula IV (where R7 and R8 are each 1W10C straight-chain alkyl).

EFFECT: A liquid crystal display element which makes it practical to perform time division up to a duty ratio of 1/64 at a voltage lower than 15V and produces voluminous high-quality displays, is obtained.
